Diagnose before replacing

Test speed near the router and in problem rooms. If performance is strong nearby but weak elsewhere, coverage—not the internet plan—is the bottleneck. Moving the router into the open and closer to the center of the home can outperform an expensive upgrade hidden in a cabinet.

Backhaul determines mesh quality

Mesh nodes must communicate with the main router. Wireless backhaul consumes airtime and weakens when nodes are too far apart. Ethernet backhaul provides the most consistent result, while a dedicated wireless backhaul band can help where cabling is impossible.

Buy standards for actual devices

New Wi-Fi generations improve efficiency and capacity, but older phones and laptops still connect using their supported standard. Check multi-gig Ethernet ports, security updates, and management features. A mature Wi-Fi 6E system may be better value than an entry Wi-Fi 7 kit.
